I want to let the devs know that Dawntrail restored my faith in this Live Game Service.
Main points that I liked
MSQ:
- Graphical Quality: From the moment we step on the ship to the level 100 trial the visuals impressed me a lot; I felt the same way I felt when I first started XIV in 2014; the effort in graphical quality and care really showed. While I might have some issues with some low res textures on Koana's clothes, everything else was of high fidelity and quality
- Story: At first I actually wanted to hate/dislike Dawntrail MSQ because the intro movie of it made the expansion feel too carefree and like a vacation. But the moment I stepped out the ship with Wuk Lamat I was pleasantly surprised; she and her nation stood tall as one of the greatest nations in Eitherys.
Wuk Lamat and her family dynamics were fun to watch; it was a fun competition with endearing turn of events like befriending Bakool Jaja and understanding his problems. Stuff like this was really fun to follow for me. Of course Koana's great as well, and Cahlciua is....I really wish she would've stood with us, she was simply amazing. Speaking of, Erenville's story and character growth was great, he definitely leveled up to a character I'd like to see stay with us into the future.
Overall I enjoyed the themes you touched upon such as discovery/exploring, local and continental lore, the meaning of family, the introduction of other worlds and how close they are to us and how we should see them as part of the source going forward.
- RPG: This is the first expansion since Stormblood where I felt like I was in an actual rpg instead of a movie (shadowbringers was more of a movie script than an rpg). Stuff like comedy, silly music for fun moments, and the overall party dynamics where our character doesn't have to be a Marvel hero from start to finish was great and more natural.
I also liked that when the WOL had to speak you always gave us choices as to what to say. This is also done in previous expansions but there was more of it compared to previous ones. I'd like to see this more in the future, and more choices overall as to our opinion.
- Music: Some of the best music around, as always. Sometimes I just found myself listening to Banjo Kazooie, I mean Tuloyal's town music for long periods of time, it's really engaging. Last town that had this kind of engaging music for me was Limsa Lominsa. The open world locations themselves had really good themes as well.
- Voice acting: I always play in japanese since A Realm Reborn, but Dawntrail's english voice acting was a nice surprise with Wuk Lamat. I'll go as far as to say that she captured perfectly how a female Hrothgar should sound to me.
- Chapters: You guys definitely hired some extra writers to separate the MSQ into chapters, I could tell. This is the first time since A realm reborn where you finally didn't rush any particular part of the MSQ. Each chapter had a theme that was covered very well and thoroughly. The early exploration, the new Dawnservants, and the alexandrians. Please do this more in the future; chapters fully covered and well planned is the way forth and you did a great job at it
- Battle content: All dungeons and trials had an acceptable level of difficulty, new mechanics, and design that made it fun. Not re-using old mechanics and introducing a lot of new ones was refreshing.
I didn't like that the old jobs have almost nothing new; like summoner with another bahamut, but you did great with Pictomancer and Viper.
