Current Healer Balance

I know this is a loaded title, but allow me to ask a few questions about the current state of healers.

I'll start by saying, I've only raided on healers since 4.3 of SB so I did not see the state of healers at the beginning of SB. So I'm only accounting for the latter half of SB (parts of Sigmascale and all of Alphascape), and ShB of course.

I'll pose the questions I had below along with my thoughts on them. I want to get insight on other healers from the community on these things.

  1. Why is AST's MP recovery worse than that of the other healers?

I find it weird that MP recovery is limitless on WHM without the need to meld any, thanks to Assize's low CD, Thin Air, and lillies providing free healing. I personally think it's fine that WHM has unlimited mana. Kinda fits their "ease of use" nature. I don't really see the need to nerf their MP recovery.

On SCH, the MP also feels relatively limitless with healthy Aetherflow usage, Energy Drain, and their fairy abilities.

Whereas AST only has Lightspeed (not counting Lucid since all healers have that). I find it more difficult on Nocturnal that MP becomes a bigger issue since Diurnal is more efficient due to regens. Lightspeed only cuts the MP use in half and even then, Lightspeed is better spent on long periods of movement. In SB, the original Celestial Opposition would help AST stay afloat MP-wise, but now it is gone and nothing to replace it.

I find that AST needs a small form of MP recovery perhaps through placing the right cards returns some MP back. I've seen arguments that AST is very strong and needs something to balance it out so MP issues is the answer. Is this fair?

  1. Does healer composition even matter anymore?

I don't so personally although you could make this case back in SB whenever SCH and AST were in a much better state.

I used to dread AST/WHM but since some of the changes to Noct. AST made it less painful and very viable. I do think that's the positive of the current healer balance albeit a small one.

  1. Did the "balanced" state of the healers come at the cost of their identity?

I've heard from some friends that healers are in their most balanced state atm to which I can somewhat agree with. All healers feel viable in any comp which it did not feel that way in SB.

On the other spectrum, I do feel that AST in particular suffered a lot of changes. Coming from someone who adored and liked the randomness of the SB cards, it was jarring to see what they had done. I do understand why it was done. It was to give ASTs a consistent way to use cards since no card is bad. However it is disheartening that Royal Road is gone since it was fun to chose between Extend, Enhanced, or Spread.

WHM in a smaller boat is had some of its elements taken away. At max level, we're slinging light. For the expansion maybe? Hopefully I really liked the nature aspect a lot. Aero 3 loss was also quite painful.

SCH's fairies being the same is jarring as well since Selene is just a glamour now. I suppose having two different fairies was too much.

  1. QoL issues that SE have yet to fix?

I think SCH's ghosting issue is pretty bad since the fairy will eat up abilities and not actually use them. The argument is that perhaps one needs to space out when they are used but when you have to double weave, it's pretty annoying. I'm actually shocked that they haven't mentioned or even fixed this. The fairies feel more clunky than they were in SB.

AST's opener is very frustrating on controller since there's a lot of tab targetting to do. But overall, Sleeve Draw is pain to do. Maybe they don't know what to do with solving, but it makes controller players hate frustrated to no end.

  1. Why do all healers have the same DPS kit?

I don't really understand why they need to be the same in how they fight. That makes them feel so similar since that's what you'll be casting half the time. Perhaps they wanted new healers to feel less stressed? But at the same time, they can be unique in how they deal damage.

  1. Is AST their problem child?

I think AST not really having a niche or a singular aspect to it has made it hard for them to balance out the job. Their sects are essentially WHM or SCH mode. I suppose it's too late to change that.

  1. What will the new healer do?

Other than being overdue for another job in the role, what can they do? We know that SE is making all healers similar in what their capabilities do, so what will SE do to make it stand out?

It's a pretty lengthy post and you don't have to answer all of the questions.
