Steps:
1. I noticed that my chocobo companion was not receiving experience in combat while we were fighting mobs that were giving me experience.
2. I checked the companion window only to find that it was listed as rank 0, with 0 SP and no skills. I have fought with it many times over several years. Even if I had never fought with it before, the mobs I had just defeated should have given it experience.
3. I checked that I had completed the quest My Feisty Little Chocobo and even did the follow up quest Bird in Hand.
I don't think my computer specs or internet connection are very relevant to this issue.
