Chocobo breeding for dummies?

Can someone enlighten me about the Chocobo raising? Can you now summon your Chocobo at will and it'll stay indefinitely (I assume after a while?)? What are the benefits of the different kinds of Chocobos? I'm assuming the new Chocobos don't REALLY enable you to climb mountains and fly and cross oceans like in previous FFs...?

I'm building a guide for me.

Get an egg from the Vendor in Ru'lude or do the quest or an ISNM.
Take it to your home town, hand it to the choco guy.

Day 4 it hatches & you should start feeding it & taking it for walks until it's health bar is depleted.

By day 29 I think it was, you could do the quest for choco-whistle. Your choco will be slower than a rental, but you can call it in any area where you could ride a choco. It's pretty much free & you don't have to run to town. Have to be lvl 20 to use, etc.
