In China, they just passed a law making it illegal to play MMORPGs more than 5 hours. Most people play in internet cafe type places there and the government is monitoring the games played more than ever. This might help HNM hunts for all shells. Congrats to China for doing something SE failed to do!

Wow... well i think thats good honestly, if we had something like that in america, i really do think the obesiety(sp?) problem would most certainly decrease!
 
One point the left out of the article: How exactly are they going to impose a rule like this, with obvious methods of sidestepping, to private companies like the gilsellers? If the government is bent on curbing the playing habits of it's citizens, they should just monitor the traffic at the ISP level, sniffing for FFXI specific packets. This would be easy as the packets would all be directed toward the specific server being played on from a specific ip. Time limits can then be set with little interference to the person's character, and little knowledge of routing administration. Your off-the-shelf linksys cable/dsl router is capable of this. There is definately going to be more added to this story as the Chinese Government learns more efficient methods of controlling internet use.
 
Actually I'm sure they probably will do this with packet sniffing. Sinec there is only one ISP in China anyway, which is owned by the government, it will be quite easy.
 
Seems like that would be hard to enforce... what if there's like 5 brothers or friends living together? How would the law be able to prove conclusively that any one of the five exclusively was playing more than 5 hours, rather than the 5 taking turns over a 24 hour period?

That's probably going to be a point of attack for this law. Anyone with a home network knows that computers behind a router are assigned private ip addresses. Then again, should be interesting to see if anyone actually tries to defy this law.
 
It's China, they will enforce it. They have ways. It will be interesting to see if this affects gil sellers.
