Tired of XBox and laptop, so gonna build a new comp. Gimme some tips if you can, possible problems with playing FFXI, AOC, and waiting on Diablo 3

Too lazy to shop around and friend said newegg was pretty good so everything is from them. Trying to keep it down to $1.5k budget too. First PC am gonna build, so let me know if am missing anything.

Faye, tell that jerk to come check this thread o.o

Make sure you run a 64bit OS with that setup is the first thing that comes to mind, 32 won't recognize more than 3GB of ram. Easily overlooked I suppose

You did mean to say 4GB, yes? :icecream:

4GB is plenty for most people at this point.

If you want more than 4GB, you'll need 64-bit, yes.

Eh, I thought it was 4GB, but was reading through something the other day that kept mentioning 3GB as being supported, and 4GB not.. any reason I might've misinterpreted that?

It might need part of the 4GB address space for hardware address mapping, so the full 4GB RAM wouldn't be accessible? I think that's right, but it's been a long time since I've messed with hardware.

If your video card has like 500meg of ram then i think you only get 3.5gig of your 4gig ram to play. unless you run 64bit OS?? Correct me if i explained wrong =o

Sort of correct on both points.

You can have 4GB of RAM fully if you can remap the I/O. Some machines can't and some can... That's where the 3.5GB limitation rule comes into play.

If you really want to use above 4GB ram, then 64-bit is the way to go.

Keep in mind that Vista Home Basic has a max limit of 8GB addressable, Home Premium or whatever its called now.. goes up to 16GB Addressable. Ultimate goes up to 128GB.

XP Pro 64-bit goes to 128GB
XP Pro 32-bit goes to 4GB

There are some technicalities that go with this, but generally speaking, you can use most of the 4GB.

The other slippery slope is that there still are not many apps that make true use of the 64-bit interface. Most all applications still run in 32-bit mode.

EDIT: Depending on how you configure your machine, I personally can't eat up more than 2GB of memory atm. I start to get to limited by processing power when I've got that much going. Video editing and large file manipulation are be good benefactors in a large memory pool. I'm still a bit confused on how the memory from a GPU fits into the equation, I know on laptops... it's generally shared, but for PC I kind of thought it was a seperate pool. My newest machine has 2GB RAM with a 512MB GPU pool, I use about 700-800MB of memory while FF11 and browsers running. (inlcudes window services, AV & a few small apps.)

I still remember being awestruck back in '94 when my company decided to provision an IBM SP2 with 768MB of RAM (considered but rejected getting a full 1GB) for a prototype I had just finished writing. Now Windows will barely run with that amount of memory on a PC, and we have graphics cards that big. Truly incredible.

Of course, 640K should be enough for anyone. ^_~

Yeesh. Couple of questions: Do you need a case? Do you need cooling fans? If there's monetary room, do you want to store your games on a raid drive? What games do you plan on playing? Do you really want 4GB of ram? What OS are you installing? Are you upgrading your monitor as well? Answer those, PM me your email, and I'll set you up with a wishlist on newegg. I've become some sort of new gaming machine consultant, you'll be the fourth person I've helped configure a new computer. I'll personally be building and overclocking Sojourn's new rig as well.

I'm just lucky he works for bj's. Since Koul lives in AZ with him, of course.

ALSO I SEE YOU BROWSING THE FORUMS SARAHLYNN YOU BITCH, DON'T IGNORE MY PM'S.

One of my first 'pc's was a Mac LCII. It had 4 MB of RAM but the board could only recognize 3 MB.

Commodore 64 was my first. 64k RAM, 1Mhz cpu, Basic v2.0 OS. Load "*",8,1 anyone?

Weird, type that into google and hit search, and google servers will error out.

My first computer was a TRS-80 Color Computer. 32k RAM (eventually upgraded to 64k) and just under 900KHz (you could hit almost 1.8MHz but you'd lose hi-res graphics). A year later I finally got a color TV to replace the black and white one my parents had let me use. ^_^;;

Although the computer has long been retired, my parents still use that little color TV. ^_^;;;;
