It’s come to light that one of the more popular FFXIV Discord bots is very likely spyware that was designed to help its creator meet certain nefarious goals. This is Very Bad (even if you don’t trust the allegations, the fact that the code is a black box is somewhat concerning), but until the community has an alternative, there won’t be any real way for them to move away from this bot.
My idea is to lend my development talents to the creation of an alternative. This alternative would be open-source, with a goal of keeping it transparent, and letting anyone review the code for the sake of accountability. No one could merge in spyware, and the general idea would be to create an application people could download and run on their machines (or on dedicated servers if that’s their fancy), giving them full control over what the bot can and cannot do.
I’ve got a few years of Node.js development under my belt, and I’ve poked around at the Discord API enough to get a sense for how it could work. I’d just start writing, but this is definitely a project that’s too big for me to take on alone, so I wanted to see if anyone else would be interested in contributing to build this with me.
