So we've been told they're getting close to wrapping up the "main" story we've been told since..technically 1.0, and I've seen people talk about all the regions we've seen mentioned in the game or that are on the map that we never really visit.
But the issue I've seen time and time again is once the MMO's main story that was usually a big pull for a lot of people gets wrapped up, the follow up story never carries the same "weight". It never has the same "oomph".
We saw it with FFXI, a lot of people left after they wrapped up the main story and moved onto WoW mostly, and while the second story was fun it didn't carry that same intensity or make you feel a sense of purpose like the first major story.
The Asican/Empire story arch has probably the highest stakes out of all the stories, the 'destruction' of the entire world along with whats left of a bunch of other worlds. The stakes can't get higher than that really. We've progressed from "[City-State] is in danger of falling to [Primal or Empire]" to "Eorzea itself is in danger of falling to [Primal or Empire]" to "The First and most of the Source is in danger of falling to Ascians" all with the over arching stake of "The Source + Reflections are in danger of been summarily erased/replaced"
The only stakes higher than that are "the universe is in danger" and I doubt they'll go in that direction. Now they have shown they're capable of "lowering" the stakes in the grand scheme of things and still been amazing. We went from "Eorzea as a whole is in danger of been taken by the Empire with the Ultima Weapon" to "Ishgard a singular City State is in danger of losing its 1000 year war with the Dragons". But that was still within the whole over-arching context of the Ascians plot and primals and the machinations of the Empire.
So what framing device could exist that post this major plot arc wrapping up to carry the game going forward. Sure we've got lots of places (pending they don't show up in 6.0) of the world unexplored, we got "The New World", Meracidia, Sharlayan, the Roegadyn homeland, the south sea isles aka Lalafell homeland, Dalmasca as a whole, Thavnair and probably more landmasses we know nothing of. But the overarching framing device that we've had all this time won't be there and while some might view a series of self contained stories as been fine, history has shown it leads to a downturn in interest cause there is nothing to "invest" into story wise.
So what could you foresee as been this framing device, or rather what would be good enough to keep you invested in staying in this world after we've overcome our greatest foes.
