After 10 Months And 58 Videos I Have Finally Completed The Arr Msq. Here Are My Thoughts!

Hi everyone! My name is Csaw/Chris and for the past 10 months I have been uploading weekly playthrough videos of FFXIV on my YouTube channel. This journey has been the largest YouTube project I have ever embarked on and by far the most rewarding. I recently completed the ARR Main Scenario Quests (a milestone that I’m particularly proud of) and created a video sharing what I considered to be the most interesting plot points and my general thoughts as a new player (https://youtu.be/iSUuh4ms1K0). I covered a lot in this video, but I want to share some more thoughts that came to me after reading through some of the community’s comments. So here are some more rambling thoughts!

So first thing first, I took way longer than most people need to complete ARR. When I started my FFXIV playthrough 10 months ago I promised myself to go slow and enjoy the journey, and I did exactly that. I tried to skip as few cutscenes and quest dialog boxes as I could, being sure to take in as much of this strange beautiful world as possible. It was slow, but that was good as I found the amount of lore and world building a bit overwhelming, specifically as someone that has never played any Final Fantasy game before. This was actually one of the reasons I was scared to try out FFXIV in the first place, I thought that having no prior knowledge of the franchise would hurt my experience. Yes, I’m sure that there were specific moments that would have had more of an impact with dedicated Final Fantasy fans, but as a whole I found the world and the narrative engaging.

The world was truly the highlight of my journey. I have never been more blown away by how immense and beautiful a MMORPG can be. The art style, animations, lighting and sound all played a very important role in making the world and the story engaging. The fact that I could go to an inn, get into a bed, log off, and then log on and wake up in that inn’s bed was incredible! It’s little details like this that make each and every play session extraordinaire. However, it is the community itself that won me over and convinced me to purchase the full game. In-game I would frequently run into helpful players that would never hesitate to offer a helping hand. These encounters happened often throughout my travels and would often lead to a new name on my friends list. What made this MMORPG so different from the other games that I create content for was that this friendliness extended online into my comments section. Every time I would upload a new step in my journey I would receive more helpful and encouraging comments than I would be able to reply to. It is a truly amazing feeling.

Now don’t get me wrong, there definitely were some low points. The amount of walking back and forward between NPCs and fetch quests did get tedious at times. Don’t even get me started about the amount of preparation required for a certain silly feast, when I really just wanted to kill some epic primals! The story had highs and lows, but I think it was the low parts that made the highs feel even better when you got to them. Now I know that they plan to condense the ARR MSQ and I think this is a great decision to improve new player’s experiences with the game, especially for new players that aren’t interested in taking their time with the journey. I am, however, glad that I got to experience and record my journey through this iteration of ARR, and look forward to seeing how the game improves as I move into the following expansions.

What is your favourite part of ARR?
