Dear FFXIV Dev Team,
I've been playing this game for almost a year now. Not a lot of time, certainly, in comparison to others. I'm almost done, I think, at least until Evercold comes out. But that's not the reason I'm writing this little post in the hopes that it gets seen by someone on the team.
You see, games have been part of my life for a long time, thanks to my dear mother. I have very fond memories of sitting next to her and watching her play various point and click adventure games growing up. She would routinely listen to my suggestions and draw me with her into the stories, so that we were playing together and enjoying the journey as a team.
I introduced FFXIV to my mother in early August, in the hopes that she might enjoy it as much as I have. She is 69 years old, has some arthritis in her hands, and is more or less unable to use the keyboard for movement in any setting, due to the way she's been playing games for years and using her setup.
She uses her left hand for the mouse, primarily, and she has never touched a game anywhere near FFXIV. Point and click adventure games have been her bread and butter for ages, but since they are slowly fading into something of a niche, she has been running out of games to play. And so, after looking at XIV's settings, I realised that it is entirely plausible to use your mouse alone for movement.
And that small breakthrough started what has become a revolution.
She has gone from tentatively clicking the buttons in her hotbar, to using her numpad for it. She has gone from being frustrated with an instance to blazing through Castrum Praetorium. She went from a small, slightly nervous lvl 1 Conjurer to a proud lvl 52 White Mage (so far!) and having finished A Realm Reborn with flying colours.
She barely needs me to help her through duties anymore. She certainly doesn't need me to help her through quests.
This game is so accessible that a nearly 70 year old woman who never thought she would play a game like this, with fighting and action, is actively playing and enjoying it fully. I am hoping it'll keep her mind active and sharp for many years to come, and the community will keep her company.
I don't think I can convey how happy I am to share a game I love with the one person who means the most to me. I've been trying to get her into conventional games for a while but nothing really stuck. This one, however, did. The story gripped her hard enough that she sat down and learned how to play it. And now we're running together, just like old times; as a team.
From the bottom of my heart, with two words that certainly seem like an understatement, I conclude my post: Thank you.
