What was your approach to the XIV story?

So I've been debating giving XIV another shot after some time away, there's a lot about the game I really like, but I've never been able to stick with it. One thing I never did on previous attempts was really try and " soak in " the story, and from my understanding that is by far the biggest selling point for the game. I've made it to Shadowbringers but if I'm being honest, I really rushed things and never paid too much attention to what was actually happening which leads me to this post.

There is a ton of dialogue in the game, some of which being extremly important to the actual plot, while I imagine a good bit of it is just filler / side stuff before main plot points are brought back up, what was your approach when trying to understand the story? Did you read literally everything from start to finish? Watch a video of someone summarizing the story as you played through / after? Only pay attention to the " main cast " when they showed up?

My biggest fear is that I try and pay too much attention to the more " trivial " things and end up just crashing and burning trying to read the lines of dialogue across thousands of quests, but I don't want to be the person that only pays attention to cutscenes or voiced moments and end up missing a ton of crucial information to the story.

Sorry if this question seems silly, but I know that different people have different approaches to the game while still being able to feel those big emotional moments when they happen. Despite me playing up until shadowbringers, I was basically on auto pilot, so aside from some very major moments in ARR ( I've played through ARR multiple times now ) I'm basically a fresh player as far as the story is concerned. I look forward to anything you guys have to say, and maybe I'll run into some of you out there!
