This is mostly just a thought about the direction ffxiv could take tanking in the future since the next major expansion which we are getting closer to is likely to see a new tank job along with alleged big changes to jobs as a whole. My concept is splitting the tanks into respective tank and co tank sub roles in a similar fashion to shield and pure healers. Similar to shield and pure healers the tank subclasses don't really matter in normal play and are only really important for high end content. It's mostly just to give them more identity and try to make jobs a bit more unique.
To do this the 5 tanks (including the new one in the next expansion) will be split into 2 main tanks, 2 co tanks, and either an additional main or co tank OR a flex tank similar to the role pre Shadowbringers AST played with healers. Which of the existing tanks get put in each role doesn't matter that much in my opinion but for my example we'll make Warrior and the new Tank in 8.0 Main Tanks, Gun Breaker and Dark Knight Co Tanks, and Paladin into a flex.
Main Tanks: This is the shortest section because its the easiest. Warrior remains mostly unchanged. Of course i expect some reworking and additional skills in the patch but Warrior's main job of take damage, deal damage, and heal yourself so much you make healers obsolete remains the same (hopefully with for a healer rework in 8.0). The new tank will have a similar role in focusing more on self preservation while still having at least 1 skill they can use to co tank with like how pure healers still have some shielding. Changes made to the main tanks would increase their ability gain aggro and be able to self mitigate slightly better than co tanks to differentiate them.
Co Tank: Choosing the co tanks was hard since both Gunbreaker and Dark Knight have a good amount of main tank damage negation while paladin has so much general support ability that they all could be good co tanks. I ended up picking Gunbreaker and Dark Knight since i have an interesting idea for Paladin as the Flex. The co tanks would remain similar in terms of damaging and self mitigating tools but they'd get their ally mitigation abilities changed a bit as well as adding new ones with the new job levels. Dark knight's Blackest Night and Gunbreaker's Aurora and Heart of stone would gain additional strength or shorter cooldowns when cast on allies to emphasize the role and make them feel different from Main Tanks.
Flex Tank: This is a fun one since its the only role which isnt already somewhat in the game. My concept is to have Paladin act as a supportive jack of all trades tank. Paladin's current ability to act as a pseudo caster in its damage rotation would remain unchanged but its defensive and supportive abilities would be altered. While Paladin's gauge system will remain the same in terms of gaining and using it's resource it would completely change its skills by to have the ability to change between 2 oaths Oath of Protection and Oath of Preservation. Oath of Protection would have its gauge skills remain mostly the same as current paladin with minor tweaks to make them easier use with shorter cooldowns. Oath of Preservation would change the skills to grant damage reduction, and healing to yourself. The Oaths would be something you likely change before combat once you see who your other tank is and whether they're taking the role of Tank or Co Tank.
Bonus idea: I think it could be fun to play with the idea of giving more jobs a revive. Since phoenix downs can be used in alot more content and there already exists some dps with revives in their kits it's not wild at this point to introduce it to more jobs. For this example i think giving the co tanks and oath of protection paladin a revive would help them shine more as a co tank. Due to co tanks having the survivability of a tank while not having to take much aggo they usually end up as the last ones alive during a raidwipe. Since that's already likely to happen lets let co tanks really make a difference and feel necessary in high end content by letting them revive their healer or main tank.
tl;dr seperating tanks and co tanks into more distinct roles could help with increasing job identity in 8.0
