Tanking as a Sprout?

Hi everyone! Recently picked up FF14, I've been playing MMOs (mostly WoW, resto shaman) for pretty much my whole life. I love the lore of Final Fantasy, and am a sucker for a good story, so here we are.

I've been really struggling to decide what to play - long story short, I decided to give tanking a shot. I'm almost level 60 PLD, but will be switching to GNB ASAP. My character has a tragic backstory and everything.

I am in the patch content between ARR and Heavensward (I think ) and have only done the story dungeons once, mostly with NPCs, but have done a few leveling roulettes.

In WoW NA, tanks are expected to know optimal routes, mechanics, shot-call, etc. There is really no room to learn, you're just expected to know all the things first.

I am very much a "learn by doing" person. I prefer not to look up guides and enjoy solving mechanics with my tiny brain. Once is also not enough for me to commit things to memory - I need to run dungeons a few times to really learn the routes, how big to pull, etc.

Am I doing my groups a disservice by not watching guides ahead of time? What advice do the veterans around here have for an aspiring tank? I always let my group know I'm new and everyone so far has been wonderful, it's refreshing. I try to cycle my mitigation, pull a few groups at a time, and interrupt when I can.

If there are any other sprouts in NA that want to learn together, I'm happy to group with you when we're on - especially those dungeons that don't offer duty support!

Thanks in advance for the advice! ❤️
