I may be totally off base, but I was wondering why Halmarut was chosen as the new major ascian, and something clicked when I read the quote from Halmarut's memory crystal in ShB.

Behold, my friends. Embraced by the earth and caressed by the wind, vibrant life flourishes. All is right in creation.

And then read the prayer that the Millalan Speakers passed down for generations:

O life, flourish on this faraway shore, Unfurl your fragile petals with fearless joy. Let this sky grant shelter from darkest storm, And here bloom, hand in hand, forevermore.

Similar, no? That sounds like it could have been a quote directly from Halmarut? Stranger still, I don't think the Ninth was desolate when the milalla first came to it. So why would they leave with that message? And then you think about what they did when they arrived. They made electrope in other to help stop a strange, anomalous increase in lightning aether. If I remember correctly, ascians operate by aspecting a shard with an element and then manipulating its inhabitants to push it over the edge. For instance, the defeat of the Shadowbringer caused the Flood of Light. Well, electrope was used to make a doomsday weapon. Lindblum detonated the one that pushed the shard into full levin aspect, but it didn't overflow into the Source for some reason.

So, we now know that;

1) The milalla escaped the Fifth Calamity with a message they passed down that is quite similar to the sort of thing Halmarut would say. It's unclear if the distant shore they were sent to was even desolate at all, which I feel would make a Halmarut connection stronger.

2) Once there, the milalla created something that would flood the world with Levin in exactly the same manipulated manner of the First and Thirteenth.

3) As an ascian, it would have been Halmarut's job to oversee a plot just like this.

4) Halmarut is suddenly back in the picture as a major tease for 8.0 and beyond.

I think Halmarut was the ascian in charge of joining the Ninth to the Source. For some reason, this didn't work. But her plan was to bring genius arcanists to the Ninth who would, probably with further manipulation, create a weapon powerful enough to harness the anomalous levin and flood the shard with it. I think this rejoining failed or stalled for some reason. Now the plan for the rejoinings is over and Halmarut has no reason to pursue it, so she instead joins the Winterers to try to weather whatever is to come.

This also suggests where the key might have come from: If Halmarut sent the milalla to the Ninth, then she had the key. And she knows how to use it and we may depend on her to use it ourselves.

This all might be tinfoil, but the pieces are spread out and I think some partial picture is clicking into place.
