My wife and I want to get into MMORPG and we have some questions

As the title suggests we are curious about FFXIV. We are both aware the series has been around for mamy years; however neither of us have played.

Here's a few questions we're hoping to get answered.

1. 
   Is the community still active on XIV ONLINE?
   
   
2. 
   Are they (the devs) still doing productive updates?
   
   
3. 
   How is the overall content of the quests/ openworld? (Subjective)
   
   
4. 
   Is there a similar game from this title anywhere near release or mention of release?
