Meleeing Statues

I'm a little confused at the moment about when, if ever, statues should be meleed. I've always been under the impression that meleeing statues was just about the ultimate no-no in Dynamis due to Seismostomp, along with the fact that they're so easy to kite indefinitely. Yet /assist pointed me in the direction of statues a handful of times this last Sandy run.

The first couple times, I assumed it must be a mistake, and immediately turned away and disengaged. After it became clear that statues were indeed occasionally being targetted and engaged, I finally was about to attack one. But then someone (Chame?) said not to melee the statues.

So what's the deal? Do we ever melee statues, e.g. if all the BLMs have gone down perhaps? If the main tank selects a statue and no one has directly said to melee the statue, should we go ahead and engage, or just assume there's a mistake and back off? Some clarification would be appreciated.

We usually don't but we had 3 or 4 BLMs for that whole run so it became a bit of a necessity at times.

We had 3 BLM, 2 weakened and 1 dead or worse a couple times. Not much could be done a couple of times in there except burn them down with melee quickly.

Ideally what we'd do is have them kited by THF/NIN or NIN until we can burn them down with MP later.

Reasoning is that they can blow up & wipe the ally just like Astral Flow (or so I've heard, never seen it myself).

The main reason statues are not melee'd is they have a very painful aoe stun move, making them a poor target.

However, statues with blue eyes give a benediction effect when killed, and I am usually of the belief that melee'ing them down is an excellent idea if the opportunity is there. Any damage you take fighting them will be given back once they die, and they are usually unlikely to kill many people with the AoE unless the alliance is in very rough shape.

I will typically target blue eye statues if the Blm party needs a hand as they are of great benefit at their death.

Also, many but not all blue/green eyed statues have very very very low melee resistance. I can 3 hit them on mnk. Red eyed statues are soloable easily by a thf. nin, or rng, they just need to move away when lacking shadows/kite.

Thanks for the clarification. While looking around, I think I figured out why I thought meleeing statues was such a bad thing. The ffxiclopedia page for Dynamis Statues includes the following:

Dynamis statues have a very high TP gain rate, even minimal melee attacks will result in the statue using a TP move, these moves are typically always AOE and cause very high damage to anyone within range. Statues should never be meleed, even in the most dire situations.

I generally take anything in the wiki with a grain of salt. But combined with a general negative attitude toward meleeing statues that I've seen pretty much everywhere, this tidbit probably got lodged in the back of my brain. It's good to hear that it's not as bad as that quote makes it out to be.

I read somewhere that certain statues CAN be meleed. In general... seismostomp sucks which is why the consensus is to nuke them down.

We actually melee statues in Xarcabard, although most people probably didn't know because the puller has usually killed it by the time the rest of the alliances catch up.

Haha I was the /assist person and caused this confusion. When all the BLM are dead or weakened .. Yes I know the best answer is to have someone kite statues. I voked one to get it off healers and since I was over in a corner was meleeing it when the alliance caught up with me once. Another time we had 3-4 statues and no living BLM and, short of just all standing around dieing, meleeing seemed the best answer. I know now to ask a couple people to kite some of the statues maybe. and maybe have a NIN or THF melee one away from main alliance?

Anyway we live and learn. Next time we are that short of BLM, perhaps all NIN and THF could be on statue round up duty and keep track of where the statues are and if the BLM bite the dust, just kite the statues around until we can decide what to do.
