EDIT: Thank you everyone for the responses. I didn't expect this to get as much traction as it did. Honestly, I just kind of wanted to vent out my frustrations with the game a bit, because I really did want to like it. I've heard great things about the story, and I was curious what the most popular MMO would be like. I'm honestly a little jaded about how much everything in the game has been clashing with my interests. I'll try checking out the story on Youtube and the Wiki, but I think the gameplay just isn't for me.

I'm a new player roughly 60 hours into the game. I've completed the ARR story, done all the blue quests I could find, and raised up a warrior to level 56 and Dragoon to level 50. I try really hard not to judge games like this in the beginning, and instead try and project my expectations on what I think the game will look like *after* I have gone through the story and normal content. But honestly, everything about this game is really starting to wear on me, and after seeing how many more quests I have to do just to get to Heavensward, I'm finding it harder and harder to justify the time and energy investment I've put in.
Can veterans of the game chime in with what their day-to-day experience with the game is like? I hear on and on about how good the story is, but for me a game's most important aspect is the gameplay. If the only appeal of the game is the story, I might as well just pull up a youtube video and skip all the fluff.
For gameplay, are people normally just doing the duty roulette? Are dungeons/trials/raids the main content of the game everyone does? What do people do once they get max gear for their job? I really want to know if the game changes in any meaningful way later or if I have already experienced the core of the game.
My unsolicited rant and frustrations with the game are below for those interested in the context.

I'm the type of player who always gives a game a chance to sell its story to me, but if it fails to draw me in after a while I'll disregard it entirely. For me, I gave this game about 3-4 hours of the story before giving up on it, since everything I was doing just felt like poorly presented fluff and filler. Then, I saw both JoCat's video on how he got into FF14 after 300 hours, and WoodenPotato's video on comparing GW2 and FF14, and decided to give FF14's story another chance.
So I started paying attention and reading everything right around when the Scions were introduced and I get recruited into their ranks.
I'm aware the story gets better. I'm sure there is actual voice acting and better paced cutscenes and animations that get introduced later. But MY GOD, and I'm sorry for the people who really like the story, but the story experience of ARR was total dogshit. I feel like the 50+ hours of the MSQ of ARR is easily boiled down to a few bullet points, and the rest of the experience is the same tired formula of:
None of the characters or cutscenes have been particularly interesting. And none of the gameplay has felt rewarding. Dungeons and trials are okay, I guess, and after doing the intermediate training I can see that there is undoubtedly going to be fights with more and more complex and detailed variations of "the floor is lava". But honestly? After a full campaign of dungeons and trials, I'm getting kind of sick of it, and the thought of doing 5 more campaigns-worth is off-putting. The thought of them also being the "main" thing after I finish the story is also unappealing.
The combat is also wearing on me. I can understand the the global cooldown was implemented for balancing reasons, but Jesus it makes the game so slow, especially when you're just out in the world doing the MSQ or hunting logs. And why have I played a job for 50+ hours and don't have my full kit yet? Why is it so slow on introducing to me all my tools?
And it feels like all the jobs play the same? I feel like every job has a distinct combo and there's no real way to customize your playstyle at all. Every warrior plays the same as every other warrior. And between warrior and dragoon, they honestly also feel exactly the same in playstyle. Are the only differences between jobs the skill animations?
Why is everything locked behind a stupid quest? There are a lot of features you just miss out on if you walk by the easily missable quest in that area. And you're telling me I can't experience any of the expansion content without suffering through the MSQ and waiting for the game to decide I now get to get new toys? What if I don't want to do the story and want to take a break from it? It feels like there is literally nothing else to do since the only content available are completionist checklists or dungeon content I've already done.
And I feel like half the time I can't even play the game. I've played for a week and I've already been kicked out twice for maintenance (why is this still a thing? Arenanet and other MMO developers have solved this over 15 years ago). When I do get to play, I'm stuck in a queue to get into the game, stuck in a queue to do any dungeons, or I'm waiting for 5+ minutes of my character running/flying to an objective with nothing in between.
The housing system looks intricate, but I don't really care about that kind of gameplay. I never see anyone chatting ever, even in the Limsa plaza where there's always like 100+ people there. The glamour system feels clunky, where you need specific items to add items to your glamour dresser, and I don't feel like I can use it half the time anyways because my current gear is comprised of skins I also want in my dresser but I don't want to overwrite them and lose track/forget to add when I'm done use them. PvP is kind of what you'd expect from this kind of game, and I'm not really interested.
Guys, I'm trying. I really am. But I'm just not seeing the point of it all. Nothing about the gameplay is appealing to me. Am I just incompatible with this game?

- Go find the person who does the thing
- Person who does the thing doesn't like you or needs something, so you do 3-5 chores for them around the area, walking back and forth over and over
- After your chores, person who does the thing needs another person for help to do the thing
- Go find second person to help with the thing, and then do 3-5 chores for them.
- Finally do the thing.
- Rinse and repeat FOR THE ENTIRE STORY.
