I started playing Final Fantasy XIV in 2017 two weeks before Stormblood launched. I had never played an MMO before, and had only beat a couple Final Fantasy games at that point. I bought 14 more so because of the story rather than the gameplay.
Anyway, I started A Realm Reborn, but because I felt “behind” and wanted to be at Stormblood with everyone else, I rushed through the game, which is almost as bad as scene-skipping. I got to Stormblood and by the time I completed that and Shadowbringers in 2019, I didn’t have a clear grasp of the plot. As you all know, the storyline is complex and it’s not as easy as explaining it in a couple sentences. So in 2020 (back when going out was mostly forbidden and everyone was quarantining) I decided that I wanted to redo the entire XIV game so I can get a better understanding of the story. However…
Like I said earlier, while I consider myself a huge fan of the franchise, I only had beat a couple FF games. I’ve always wanted to play every mainline game as well as a few of the spinoffs. Plus, I know XIV has a ton of references to past games, but the only way to pick up on those is by playing every FF game.
2020 was a perfect time to start given we weren’t able to do much. But going through every mainline game, some of their prequels/sequels and a few spinoffs took a damn long time: 5.5 years to be exact but I went in order by release date for the mainline (then did the prequel/sequel games for any mainline that has an extended timeline following when I beat that specific mainline game.)
But I finally played and beat every FF except for 11 and last summer was when I finally got to redo XIV on NG+. Let me just say that this game is 100% worth replaying if you get the chance. Not only did I pick up on so many past FF references, but now I know the story. I also take the time to talk to any of the scions/other NPCs before progressing a quest for further detail/backstory.
I absolutely love this game, the music, characters, graphics, the zones/areas as well as the story. It’s my personal favorite game of all time.
Point of the post: Don’t rush or scene skip if you’re new. Don’t feel like you’re “behind everyone” and “must catch up.” Enjoy the hell out of this game because it truly is an amazing story. The entire franchise is great and seeing how it’s evolved over time has been quite the experience as a gamer.
With that said - I’m starting post-Shadowbringers and am very eager to start Endwalker because I’ve heard nothing but great things about it!
