I would like to start by saying that these are mostly theories and speculation based exclusively on in-game MSQ. I would like to hear if anyone has any further points to contribute to my theory, or to discredit it!
Here are my strongest arguments:
1. At the end of 7.4, we get a clear indication that our next "threat" won't be a villain, but instead natural disaster. We don't know exactly what, but Etheirys seems to be crying out. Of course, since this is Final Fantasy 14, we're still going to need trials and a "final boss" for 8.0, so what could that be? Could you think of anyone, or anything, who would benefit from stopping us from saving the planet? That's right, I'm talking about an evil corporation, like Shinra.
2. Halmarut is going to play the role of Aerith. Halmarut seems to be the only person who can hear the cries of the planet, and is probably going to warn us about it, maybe in 7.5. She's also an Ancient, like Aerith, and I think their personalities match based on what we've seen. We already have the concept of a lifestream in XIV since forever, and it seems that now the lifestream itself is "speaking", and only Halmarut can hear.
3. The Winterers may play the role of Avalanche. In VII, Avalanche's goal is to stop Shinra from destroying the planet. We don't know much about the other Winterers, but from the ones we do know, it looks like they're trying to mitigate "Shinra's" damage, and failed. Maybe they're too weak to fight them head-on. It could be that all of Preservation was created with the purpose of mitigating "Shinra's" damage. If they can't save the planet, at least they may save the people. (Also Winterers... Avalanche... kinda fits, no?)
