I decided to completely start the game over on a new account (which cost almost as little as buying the expansion) and finally take the game for what it was.
I’d always played FFXIV as a substitute for WoW with a “min-maxer” mindset. I’d skip everything I could and focus solely on “competitive” content. The result: I had several stints over the years, but I never really got hooked on the game.
Now that I’m taking my time to engage with the story (even though the AAR is tough to get through, to be honest), I’m really enjoying it immensely, and the game is a great way for me to unwind... it’s a bit slower-paced, like a (very) long visual novel with multiplayer features. It's far from perfect (to be honest, no MMO is), but I enjoy playing it for an hour or two in the evening to clear my head. And most importantly, without just aiming to reach the end and the endgame content. If it takes me 6 months to get to the end, then it'll take me 6 months. and that's fine: I think it’s really this revelation that made me start to truly appreciate the game for what it’s worth.
For people coming from other games, like I did, I have just one piece of advice: take your time. FFXIV isn't World of Warcraft or Guild Wars 2. If you rush through to the end without stopping to think, you'll miss 99% of the game, and you'll be overwhelmed by all the systems and features you skipped over. It's not the destination, it's the journey. The endgame content is fun, but in my opinion, it's not really worth getting FFXIV if that's the only thing you're interested in.
