PS5 scams.
With the announcement of ending PS4 support, some may be tempted to get a "head start" on the PS5 acquisition. However, like many things that have been on-going with popular stuff, there is a fairly rampant and common scam to be made aware of.
FB Marketplace. eBay. And more.
Here a great many PS5s can be found. Ranging from $20 USD to $200 USD. But the scam is not in the pre-owned condition or other claims. It's the fact that someone got theirs from a purchasing program of which installment payments were being made until they weren't anymore.
Companies like MDG Finance and Purchasing Power offer common high value items at a greater than market value. This is because they force into the total cost a warranty service which at most times increase the item's MSRP by 50%. But not to worry! They have a way to assure you can afford it via installment payments over 1-2 year periods. So your PS5 starts at $499.99. But for you? $749.98 sounds about right. But hey, it'll only cost you about $65 per month!
The problem with PS5s that come from these is that people often forget about serial numbers. And so when they stop making payments, the financing company defaults them for collections. But at the same time, the financing company reports the serial number to Sony and effectively locks the device so it can never connect online for anything.
This is where FB Marketplace comes in. The item is listed for an unbelievable steal of a price! Pictures provided show it has all its cables and accessories. A TV screen image shows it has no assigned account and appears to be in working order.
They just forgot to tell you that you cannot use online services on that particular unit.
There is no way it can be unlocked. Sony has made it clear that they do not reverse the process. Not even for a cost.
So beware when looking for a PS5. The offered cost is at most times a safe bet to avoid the scam. But even "reasonable" values can still lead to a scam. These people will not communicate back when you demand a refund. Burner/dummy accounts are a thing.
Happy hunting!
