Before I start HW, I want to discuss ARR and its ending

Okay so please no spoiling past ARR. I just started the first quest of HW to confirm I was indeed done. I did do patch quests and all that so no, I didn’t just beat up Gaius and the Ultima weapon and expected HW :p

Anyways just like Alphanauid I was also blinded by idealism and didn’t realize the fundamental issues of the Crystal Braves meant they would never be a fighting force for good. I am thinking back now to every moment that could have changed in context knowing what comes next but I don’t believe I got everything. So far this is what I understand to be some foreshadowing of the betrayal:

  1. Off the bat, the fact we recruited 2 members that were in it for the wrong reasons (former galarean spy and the profit driven lalafell guy) should have been a red flag about how loyal most of the new people really were.

  2. The corruption we’ve seen of fighting forces in game (ifrit arc) should have also been a warning that coin is powerful

  3. Apparent inconsistencies with how much the Ivy (the spy in the immortal flames) was helping with intel. She could not have reasonably had all the knowledge she had about ishgard and the braves, and was used to hide the betrayal. (I don’t know about this one, I just saw it from the Jesse Cox ARR recap video)

  4. Obviously Riol outright telling you that something isn’t right and to keep an eye out.

Just yeah, like I was utterly shocked with how ARR ended. I had a gut wrenching feeling towards the end when I didn’t know who I could trust exactly, and how many people I could trust from the crystal braves. Then we got to the tea party and I just lost it

I also didn’t realize how unpopular the patch quests were, I thought it was just some good storytelling overall! For context I disliked base ARR, it was slow and tedious for me (especially titan arc) and the Scions were not given enough moments for me to care much about them, even during the epic break out scene when we rescued Minfillia, I was all “eh”.

The patch quests changed this. We are now acknowledged as a hero, the scions are (were ) taken seriously as players of Eorzea. I grew to love and care for the characters, Minfillia and Alphanauid especially given how much development they both had. From helping the Dorman refugees to the Iceheart arc, I was truly enthralled with how GOOD everything was. Stakes were defined, fetch quests were less pronounced for me. It felt like the game was hitting its stride! I enjoyed my time doing them, and even though I was angsty towards the end of wanting to progress and get appropriate gear for my level 61 white mage (no market board) as well as explore a new map already, I did grow to enjoy the games story :)

I hear HW is peak and if I can enjoy patch quests… I am looking forward to this ❤️
