I think it's time to make a dedicated thread on Bastion to discuss the new job for Evercold.
First things first, a couple of links:
-Bastion Keynote
-Bastion Reveal Trailer
We should start with what we do know. It is a Main Tank and will only be available in the 'evolved' action mode. It's weapons are known as 'Skyltborg', which are shields which look to have triple guns on one side and 'claws' on the other. The job starts at level 90 and unlocked in Limsa Lominsa. It is also able to protect itself and allies with defensive actions and curative boons.
Next, to go through the reveal trailer:
Starting with the first action, Bastion pulls back their right arm whilst raising their left arm infront of them, with barriers forming around the weapons.
The next looks to be a ranged attack, by firing the 'claws' at the enemy, starting with the right arm, then the left.
The next is a gap closer, leaping forward and slashing down with the left Skyltborg.
Next, the 4 swings, right, left, right, left. Followed by a short jump, slashing down with the left, then uppercut with the right, another uppercut with the left, launching themselves into the air, then firing the caw down at the enemies feet.
Next, they show the Bastion spin the Skyltborgs around, with an aether effect surrounding the weapon, distinctly different from the barriers from before.
The Bastion then fires the Skyltborg guns, first right then spin and right again. When the projectile is fired, there is a blue blast from the Skyltborg with a separate projectile being fired at the enemy. Next is then 3 shots fired in quick succession from the left Skyltborg and finally a jump, firing the left weapon at the enemies feet, followed by the right, then both together.
Next is an aetheric spherical barrier that surrounds the Bastion, likely to be the 'Guardian' equivalent.
Next, the Bastion puts both Skyltborg into the ground and fires 3 shots, each one exploding at the ground at the enemies feet.
Next, holding both Skyltborg forward, they charge a shot and fire a powerful shot.
It is worth noting that all attacks look like they could be AoEs of various shapes, just based on the animations.
Now to speculate on how it will play.
I think a key thing to note is the 2 actions that have effects around the weapon, to me, it looks like they are switching 'modes' from ranged to melee and vice versa.
This then creates a divide in the job, what does it mean to be melee or ranged and how are they going to tie together. You will need a reason to switch between them to make the most of your job, not only from an offensive side, but also a defensive side. I can see the melee option having passive mitigation, the animation that potentially switches to the melee mode has the shield effect after all, so it makes sense. This can also tie into the 'counter enemy attacks' where you build a resource from taking damage which you can spend to deal counter attack damage, with more damage coming from a higher amount of resource generated. this makes it different to Paladin who has fixed damage off of 1 attack, this builds up over the course of a longer duration to deal the damage later.
This then leaves the ranged aspect, I don't want it to just be 'blade combo, but guns' as that is too close to Paladin, instead, I propose a different solution. Ranged is the 'default' state, by using the ranged combos, you build up resources, which are spent during the melee phase, which, in turn provides a resource to unlock the strongest attack/s, which appear in ranged, ie. the 'laser' shown in the reveal trailer. This creates a reason to go between the 2 modes whilst getting a 'reward' for doing so. Importantly, you don't lose resources when switching, so, if you imaging you can stack up to 3 ranged resource, you switch to melee, then spend 2 resource to build 2 melee resource, you can switch back to ranged and build back up to 3 ranged resource whilst still keeping the melee resource. This means, your resource management is about juggling the resources, whilst not overcapping due to fight mechanics.
It'll be interesting to see if anyone has any other thoughts, are they looking forward to it or maybe speculation on how a rotation is going to look. For me, from what I have seen so far, I am fairly neutral. I'm not against dual shields, but it isn't a weapon of choice for me. So, my enjoyment will likely be based on how it plays, but time will tell.
