Are crafts worthwhile in early game, specifically gathering ones?

Just trying the game again after many years break, so I’ve forgotten most things.

Are the gathering jobs worthwhile with respect to their output in the early game?

Meaning: can I make good money or get good stuff?

What do I do with the stuff I get, vendor it or put it on the board/auction, or feed it into the other crafts?
