Hi! I'm Bio-Roxas. I do a lot of high-end raiding so you may have seen me in pf or I afk a lot in Eorzia on Aether cause I am very forgetful and don't log out, so you might've seen my little catboy staring at a wall somewhere.

I recently started a series after realizing that the dungeons in XIV are just full of really interesting details so I thought it would be fun to walk through and explore some dungeons, showcasing the area as well as showcasing the different enemies that are present.

I don't want to just drop my video and leave so I figured I could note a few finds that I made in the first dungeon, Sastasha, in a post and if it piques your interest enough that you want to watch the whole thing, I can link it here.

  • The opening area of the dungeon is full of different kinds of beasts and animals because it is a front for the pirate hideout. It was specifically built behind a Coeurl den to keep random people from stumbling upon it. There's some puns in the names of this front area such as Wauling Pond (Wauling meaning the sound a cat makes when it whines or yowls) and Cattery which is the name for a breeding place or housing for cats.
  • This one might be reaaally apparent but I never realized the women that were captured that is discussed in the description of the dungeon can actually be seen in the map begging for help! This actually freaked me out the first time when I was exploring for the first time and came upon an NPC. Felt like the start of a creepy pasta haha
  • Mistbeard's Cove was taken over by this group of pirates but was also present in 1.0 as it's own area! It was cool to see it still showing up here. Captain Madison was the leader of the Reavers and is one of the sub-bosses in this dungeon. After you defeat him he runs to the cove, asking Denn, the boss of this first dungeon, for help though would be struck down. Captain Madison would later appear in the Hard version of this dungeon as the Sahagins would infuse them with aether from Leviathan and transform them into Drowned and when he is defeated there subsequently can be found as a wandering spirit in the Palace of the Dead. This is probably one of my favorite lore tidbits. It is wild that this random pirate captain actually had a mini kind of arc haha
  • Since I mentioned the Hard version. It was really cool to see how even though there were different starting points from the original dungeon and the hard version of Sastasha it funneled into the same area. It showed that there were other hidden mechanisms with many different winding passages. There's one "dead end" in the original dungeon which actually you find in the Hard dungeon has a secret wall that leads out to another part of the Sastasha Seagrot, which again had a lot of animals and beasts that dissuaded random people from exploring further.
  • There also appeared to be different iterations of this dungeon or a broader idea that never was able to be implemented. The specific example that comes to mind is the open area where you travel across the water right before the Coeurl fight. You can actually see that there are specific rocks that block passages with a dead end behind them. My thoughts are that it appears that this whole area would have been maybe centered around finding hidden mechanisms to unlock those blocked off areas and fight mobs or clearing them all would reveal where the mechanism would be to open up the giant rock leading into the pirate's hideout.
  • I also thought it was interesting that they used the base classes with the same animations for pugilists, archers, marauders, and others which may be asset reuse but I found it interesting to see continuity. It's like the same fighting styles being used by enemies just made it feel like those specific practices for fighting fundamentals are a part of the world.

This is probably long enough at this point but I hope y'all found these kind of trivia notes about the first dungeon interesting! I also am sure that others who have played this game far longer have some insights and lore they know about this place so I'd love to hear other's thoughts and trivia they've picked up!

If you happened to check out the video I am still trying to find a good format so any feedback is much appreciated ^^ I really want it to be a good series so let me know your thoughts to improve it!
