This seems like the best place to post this, and I am pretty sure it's been brought up before, but I wanted to simply add my voice to any others. I bought the game a long time ago through the Square-Enix store for PC. At the time, I had solid reasoning as to why I was doing it that way as opposed to purchasing the game on Steam. In any case, that is what I did. At the time, I had no idea that by doing so, I would be locked out of ever purchasing it on Steam, but that is how it works.
The two versions are mutually exclusive for some reason, and once you have either Steam or SE Store, never shall the two mix. You can add licenses for any other platform, and over the years I have added PlayStation licenses to my account. However, Steam is not available to me, even though I would even be willing to pay for the new licenses, just like I did with PS.
The reason I would want to do that? I am a Steam Deck owner, and I have just recently gone through the somewhat arduous task of installing FFXIV on my Steam Deck and getting it to work in Gaming Mode using a trick with a third party launcher. The whole process was not exactly difficult, but it was still quite a pain and took a few hours of research and work overall. If I had been offered the opportunity to simply purchase a Steam licenses on my account, I would have save myself the trouble and done so.
I strongly recommend that Square-Enix revisit the PC license situation, and offer players some more flexibility. Being able to add Steam or S-E licenses to an existing PC account would be wonderful and simplify what I just had to go through for anyone else in future. (Or me if I ever need to do it again)
