So the villains obviously want the key.
Obviously we don't want to give said villains said key.
Luckily said key is an object, and in the Shadowbringers post patch, we utilise objects to ferry the souls of the scions back to the source. By which we know that we can take physical objects back and forth from The Source and the First.
Now obviously since the villains want the key, it is likely that they will try to take the key again. But if we don't want to let the key get into their hands, then why don't we just give it to Lyna, Ryne, Beq Lugg or Gaia on the First for temporary safekeeping.
Of course, if the villains never end up obtaining the key then this is a moot point, but if their plan requires said key, it's likely they'll somehow get it one way or another (Most likely contrived like the trial) during the MSQ from a meta standpoint. (Which with the Beatrix trial also asks why they'd set a trap to transport the WoL, but not to transport the Key itself).
A way to explain this could be by having us attempt to to take it to the First only to fail, for whatever reason (maybe it's dimension stuff is too powerful for us to physically take, as it asserts it's own aetheric field or something). This would also explain why the villains didn't try teleporting the Dawn Grail, as they'd likely know such a feat is impossible, and thus useless.
