"Though we witnessed the Final Days, our impressions could not fail to be colored by our own experiences and expectations. Those who lived through it would have perceived the event quite differently. We must bear in mind that it is no simple matter to keep the truth alive, or it will die with Emet-Selch and his kin."

I seriously love the way this game does the main scenario. Quick background: I study history (at the University of Copenhagen, currently getting ready to write a Bachelor) and historiography has always been my favorite field of study. For those who don't know, the quick and dirty on historiography is basically that it's a sort of "meta-history", understanding history by understanding why people wrote the way they did (what sort of cultural mores, political realities, and so on impacted the writer). Seeing it sort of touched upon, however briefly, by Y'shtola made me very excited in a very nerdy way. I don't really think I've seen many games play with this concept, I think the only other one I can remember is Morrowind, of the top of my head (with the story of Lord Nerevar Indoril). The idea of history being not a static "truth" but a matter of clashing (and sometimes warring) narratives is so much more engaging to me.

These forays into depth is my favorite aspect of the game's story, alongside the attention paid to nation-building and nation-rebuilding in the wake of the "main meat" of the stories. I loved touching on the political system of Ishgard following Heavensward, as well as the politics of Doma following Stormblood and the state of Eulmore after the election of Chai-Nuzz.

Am I reading too much into it? I might be. Do I care? No.

It's beautiful y'all.
