Why Is Ffxiv's World So Much More "alive" Than Other Mmos?

I recently started playing FFXIV after burning out on WoW Shadowlands and I was immediately struck by how alive the world of Eorzea feels. I've played pretty much every MMO out there, from ESO to GW2 to WoW to BDO, and for lack of a better description they all feel like games. It feels like I am controlling a random collection of pixels moving through an artificially designed world to achieve goals set by the devs. But when I'm playing FFXIV, it truly feels like I am my character, and my character inhabits the world I'm playing in. But for the life of me I cannot figure out how the FFXIV devs have achieved this. Other MMOs have better quest systems, more diverse settlements and cities, etc. But somehow they still feel like games, whereas even the generic NPCs that populate FFXIV's cities feel alive. Even theoretically immersion-breaking things like the role trainings you do at the Adventurer's Guild somehow fit in to this world seamlessly. Can anyone help me place a finger on what it is about Eorzea that captivates your emotions and senses?
