I just came back to the game after two years. I actually stopped playing classic wow for this, and I surprised myself with that because for a long time I've been saying I miss the old school mmo and the hardcore nature of them, where the world was dangerous and mysterious and you couldn't face roll your way to cap level. I still miss those elements, but I think I've discovered what's really important to me in mmos, and that is atmosphere, immersion and community.
Classic wow definitely has a more challenging and engaging leveling experience, but it wasn't enough to keep me subscribed. There's a lot of trash in that community (racial slurs, dumb kid memes, trolls etc) and just a general lack of maturity. The cities and environments are just okay, the soundtrack is lame, gear fashion is just kinda boring, even ugly at times. Nothing was really pulling me in and the class design wasn't nearly as good as I remember it being (but in no way is it bad).
Coming back to FF14 I find myself smiling all the time. The world is beautiful, the cities are big and immersive, the fashion is unique and diverse, there's role play, beautiful soundtrack, I haven't been annoyed by a 12 year old troll yet. Every class seems vibrant in a way, like they really give a lot of personality and identity to the jobs, and I love that bards can play instruments.
Even though the game doesn't have everything I want from an mmo and the leveling experience is a little dull, I'm still really enjoying it because Ezorea actually feels like a world I want to be a part of.
So I'm curious, what is it that keeps you playing FF14 over the other mmos?
