Where Are All The Arcanist Npcs?

Looking at the various NPCs in the game world, we see a variety of Jobs and Classes. Some more than others.

For the classes, most can be found everywhere. Gladiators, Marauders, Lancers, Pugilists, Archers, Conjurers and Thaumaturges are found throughout the world. Sometimes under different names, but the core concepts of the classes are everywhere. Rogues are rare, and stay hidden, so their absence in the MSQ makes sense.

As far as jobs go, they seem to exist in a few different categories:

• Almost unique (usually due to it being a ‘lost’ art) – Black Mage, White Mage, Scholar, Summoner, Warrior.

• Wiped out with only one teacher with a few others – Monk (?), Red Mage

• New or rare – Dark Knight, Machinist, Bard

• Special Forces types of jobs – Paladin, Dragoon

• ‘Foreign’ (rare in Eorzea, but may be relatively common elsewhere) – Samurai, Ninja, Astrologian, Dancer, Gunbreaker

So far, NPCs with some jobs are common, and some are rare. Among the more unique jobs, there are no BLMs outside of the job quests that I know of, but a few very powerful NPCs who are almost equivalent (Y’Shtola in ShB and Sadu). There are a few WHM NPCs, though I think we only see Kan-E-Senna in the MSQ. The only ‘Scholar’ I know of is the one quest NPC. The same is true for Summoner. There are only a few WARs, but it seems to be turning into a rediscovered job. But none of those jobs have NPCs who also appear in the MSQ.

Monks and Red Mages were almost completely wiped out by the Garleans.

The NPCs for the new/rare jobs are limited to their respective job quests, which I find strange in the case of the Machinists during the battles in Ala Migho. I would think they would have been very useful, but it can be explained away as them being too new to be properly integrated with Ishgard’s forces, or too limited in numbers.

Paladin (Sultansworn/Knight) NPCs are routinely seen in the MSQ, especially if you started in Ul’Dah. Besides Estinien, there is at least one quest chain outside of the job quests involving Dragoons. Their absence was explained during the MSQ.

Samurai and Ninja NPCs were very common in SB, and there is a prominent Dancer in ShB. Astrologians are rare outside of Sharlyan, so we’ve only seen Urianger outside of the jobs quests. Similarly, Gunbreakers originate from territory currently occupied by the Garlean Empire. It is also one of the newest jobs, with Thancred being the only MSQ NPC to date. Garleans using gunblades have been common since 1.0 though.

This leaves a rather strange hole in the visible NPCs in the game: Arcanists. While we do see Sharlyan Arcanists throughout the MSQ (Alphinaud and Urianger), no Lominsan Arcanists appear outside of the early class quests. The Arcanist guild was in game in 1.0, and they are integrated into Limsa Lominsan society, with the guild also acting as the body in charge of customs for the maritime state. In spite of this, Lominsan Arcanists are unseen out their own quests. The healer in the Marauder quest chain is a conjurer, and no Lominsan Arcanists are visibly present at any military action involving Lominsan forces.

To me, this seems very strange (not to mention a severe tactical error on the part of the Lominsan government and military). Most of the jobs/classes with limited visibility outside of their job quests have a very good reason for it. Arcanists just seem to be pushed to the side for some reason.
