There's a lot of talk about how nonthreatening the overworld is in FFXIV, which is mostly true. But there were definitely some moments when I was leveling the first time that were excitingly dangerous or downright terrifying (in a "haha im totally gonna die" way).
I think the most consistently threatening place was the Sylphlands. I started in Gridania and seeing that huge alluring region of map really pushed me to explore, but every time I walked in I'd get mobbed by the ~40ish mobs in Larkscall. Then when I outleveled them and felt safe to push in further, everything grew dark and purple, the music turned sinister, and I met a lot of VERY angry tempered sylphs.
I almost miss being level 45.
