Underestimated how much playing other jobs makes one a better tank

I main tanks, and have two characters on which I play different jobs, here’s what I learned..

  • don’t stray too far from healer if pulling multiple packs of enemies, especially at lower levels without regen

  • group enemies in a tight circle, stand at the edge of the circle, and to dodge, move around the edges where possible so the circle formation stays intact. WHM can cast a satisfying Holy, and magic DPS can catch all the enemies in their AoE

  • doton is not the enemy

  • melee DPS don’t have AoE skills until a bit later. So don’t go pulling wall to wall in Sastasha

  • self heal can and should be shared if it’s off cooldown and you don’t foresee needing it for yourself, saves healer MP and maybe a DPS life

  • it’s not necessary to position all bosses at the far north, some of them just end up having a bigger back-cleave area, people with bad ping (me) will suffer

  • dragoon (in early levels at least, didn’t get that far yet) cannot effectively attack enemies that are moving, I’m guessing due to short range. I had a tank kite enemies around in Sastasha aggressively while having two lancers, when I mentioned it they said “I’m attacking them, chill, you don’t need to” (????????) needless to say that took forever

  • on that note, tank doesn’t deal as much damage as a DPS, so only favor your uptime within reason, in other words don’t eat too many AoEs just to get a couple attacks in. Did this in Amaurot and unsurprisingly died

  • more obvious stuff, but moving enemies around as little as possible with clever dodging directions makes your DPS’s life easier, i.e for a cone attack, move to front, rather than back which would drag the boss with you. Going to the front only makes them slightly change angle, if even that

  • having finally panicked at seeing GNB/DRK invulnerability from the healer’s side, I realize it’s good to have a macro with sound or heads up in advance

  • most content doesn’t require you to use mitigations during bosses, they mostly deal bits of damage that can be fixed up with a regen, as opposed to the start of trash pulls, which you need the mitigations for
    • you could use 6-second shields for tankbusters and/or party shields for raidwides (reprisal counts in this, because it debuffs the enemy directly)

But now I notice too much when other tanks don’t do the above feel free to add on
