OK, so I am well used to one or two bards helping tired WoLs to pass time while they pose, show off glamours and get up to who knows what in who knows which private (and sometimes not so private) chat channel. Some of these bards are excellent performers.
Last night though, I was visiting some worlds on my data center and ran into an ongoing concert. I know that some players are already aware of the Songbirds from Ultros, well that group performed for about 2 hours, perhaps longer with tune after tune from a variety of genre. The thing that struck me though was the audience. There was somewhere between 50 and 75 (perhaps more) players who were gathered watching this free concert. Most were sitting or standing and listening, with applause between each new tune.
Of course there were also many players coming and going, and a few crafters who couldn't down tools for even a moment (note to self, turn off sound effects next time). so I have no idea of the total audience over time.
the whole event, with the spontaneous concert, and the audience gathering and actually stopping to list for more than a few minutes. Taking time out of the hustle and bustle of dailies and farming, to spend time just listening and appreciating the efforts of another player. A pretty good proportion of the crowd stayed for the entire performance, and it was weirdly fun sitting among the crowd, listening, applauding and just panning the camera about, people watching and listening to the music.
Perhaps some have seen this kind of thing in other games before, perhaps not. I haven't seen anything quite on this scale in a game before, and the talent on display was considerable. I can't even begin to understand how you can program Cotton Eyed Joe using the Perform feature with 7 additional performers all with their parts correctly synched up, and a very quick tempo.
Anyway, it was excellent and really felt like a community event. I hope that we can see more of this kind of thing, it really added to my game play last night even though all I did was sit in Limsa and listen. So, thanks to the Songbirds from Ultros and thanks to everyone who stuck around and listened and appreciated/applauded the performance, you all made what for me, was a new and unique in-game event.
