Spoilers ahead. Not a lot, but still wanted to flair it because I'm not a monster.
Shadowbringers is my first expansion that I've been here for from beginning to end. I started playing at the tail end of Stormblood and spent pretty much the duration of the entire expansion trying to catch up so I could be ready when Shadowbringers dropped. Just a little backstory and a warning that I might be a little biased.
Now, I'm not a music nerd in the least. I just like music. I could tell you that I like a song, but I couldn't get super technical about why I like it. I love the Limsa theme with all my little heart, and it makes me want to drop everything and go on an adventure. Revenge Twofold is one of my go-to cardio workout songs because it just gets me so amped. There's so much to love about the music in this game
But Shadowbringers really brings its A-game. The recurrence of the Ascian leitmotif throughout pretty much all of the late/end game main scenario music is phenomenal. It's this recurring thread that connects Full Fathom Five, 'Neath Dark Waters, Mortal Instruments, and To The Edge in such a beautiful way. I was listening to To The Edge in my car and when I realized it had the threads of Full Fathom Five in it I lost my mind. So of course I listened to all of the themes starting from the Tempest, and it musically tells this beautiful story of the Ascians.
The addition of lyrics, and the weaving of the main SHB theme to To The Edge in coordination with when you fight Elidibus is just...*chef's kiss*. This beautiful melding of wills,>! not in opposition to one another, but rather in concert. Idk, it almost feels like they were trying to show that the WOL had true sympathy for the plight of the Ascians and understood, but genuinely couldn't let the Rejoining happen because of their dedication to the lives not on the First and the Source, but the other shards as well. !< In a way, its absolutely heartbreaking.
I'm also kind of curious, since I'm kind of a latecomer to the game, is this something that is seen throughout the different expansions? I've definitely picked up on the different iterations of the Stormblood theme within different songs, but that's about it.
