Having recently completed ARR MSQ, and before moving into the MSQ's for 2.1 through to HW, I decided to go around and do the various level 50 sidequests (or any that unlocked post Ultima Weapon) cause I'm a completionist like that, and pre-finishing the MSQ of 2.0, I'd already done literally every sidequest possible cause I like any and all story no matter how minor.
Now while the very amusing adventures of Hildibrand are obviously the highlights of the 2.X era of side quests, and I thoroughly enjoyed the treasure hunting side quest with riddles and clues (I only had to cheat on the final puzzle cause math) despite the amusing yet also terrible reward, I'm finding the Delivery Moogle quests to be probably my personal favorite.
Going around and doing little story building quests for some of the various random NPC's you met during the MSQ is amazing, like the 3 Adventurers Guild patrons and getting their backstories, or poor bloody Drest from the Titan questline, or Professor Lamberteint and his students from the corrupted crystals stuff needed for Garuda. There is also the little Lala girl who is in Little Ala Mhigo we met during MSQ and her motivation, or the quest involving the guys you fight at the end of Halitali (Hard). Or hell the fact our fabulous hairdresser Jandelaine is a noble and has a brother. Then we got Memeroon and his brother at Bronze Lake having their little quest (and honestly I think this would've been annoying had I not been able to fly over the lake. Quest makes you cross it like 6 times, which would be annoying with the ferry). Or the Miqo'te girl near Fallgourd Float we briefly encountered before having this whole backstory about been saved by someone who spared the lives of some Ixali children who repay the favor when grown up.
Then we get world building for some characters you wouldn't think like the thaumaturge guilds receptionist (while gaining some decent backstory of the guild itself). We got some backstory of the Coeurlclaw bandits and the tale of the two sisters involved in that delivery quest (On that note I'm sad there is no real follow up to that except a fate that lets you go kill the "coeurlclaw king" that is there anyway regardless of this quest. Like I want to save that sister from a literal cult run by a sicko who just wants a harem :<). Some minor backstory for the Fishermans Guildmaster, and story about the bloody Black Rabbit Trader girl in Gridania who mostly exists to sell you racial starting gear. Probably biggest surprise is a quest about the two drunk bastards you fight in a fate in some middle of nowhere quay in lower La Noscea.
Like for people who are in 5.0+ stuff gushing over the main story been amazing this is probably all stuff you've long forgotten and characters who don't matter anymore as I assume most are never used again. But for someone fresh off of ARR's story, and having interacted with most if not all these NPC's throughout various sidequests and MSQ in the 2.0 content, all this fleshing out of extremely minor characters just made me smile.
And its a shame from what I've looked up they don't seem to revisit this format of story telling again later as the Delivery Moogle quests seem to be limited to 2.X content.
