Thanks For Having Me - A Wow Player’s Story.

I started playing FFXIV seriously last month after being pretty dismissive of it for quite a long time. I was very tentative about my feelings towards the game.

My wife has been playing since the end of Heavensward, and would occasionally say that she’d love to play FFXIV with me. But, I had already tried the game very briefly during 2.0 and it didn’t capture me at the time, so I sort of had a ‘been there, done that’ attitude towards it, despite being a huge fan of the franchise.

When Shadowbringers dropped, my wife really threw herself into the game, and I became vaguely intrigued. But, I was very heavily involved in WoW Classic, playing the hell out of Blizzard’s latest offering and also running a podcast about it that kind of blew up and took up a lot of my time. I wasn’t interested in introducing a second MMO into my life.

That was a mistake.

After 9 months of Classic, I realised it was silly to not give FFXIV another chance, even with my reservations, as I wanted to play something with my wife (she had no interest in WoW).

With a month under my belt as a WHM my opinion on FFXIV completely changed.

This game rocks!! How did I miss this??!?

I hit 80 last night and have mostly been spamming dungeons and I’ve never had this much fun with the gameplay of a class in an MMO before. WHM just feels like me, and really suits me to a tee, the heals feel great and the challenge of weaving in dps between heals has been a fun twist on the traditional healer approach in other games.

The community has been amazing as well, and is obviously a bit different from the WoW community, particularly the Classic community which tends to be pretty hardcore, which is fine by me (even though I’m not a hardcore player) but I’ve really enjoyed mixing it up with a bit more of a lighthearted feel here.

I still play and love WoW Classic but have now realised I want time in my life for both of these great games.

Thanks to all who I’ve played with for being accepting of a new player, thanks to all who post here as I haven’t stopped reading this sub the past month (first time poster lol), and thanks to all the content creators who have helped teach me the essentials (Msteq, Desperius, Larryzaur etc.)

See you in Eorzea!!
