Tempering, And The Expression Of Self

Tagging as spoilers because I'll be referencing some stuff in 5.0 MSQ.

So over the course of the game, we've seen a lot of primals/eikons, and their propensity for overcoming and taking over the sentient species of Eorzea. While in the first cutscene with Ifrit, we see that the newly tempered are overjoyed, casting praise for their new patron, while in Satasha (Hard) we can see that Captain Madison, drowned by Leviathan, is still capable of expressing himself, while the other members of his crew can only gargle praises for the Lord of the Whorl.

Similarly, the Dreamers of Sri Lakshmi are most certainly tempered, but they seem to be in varying stages of consciousness, with some being in sleeplike stupors, while others are fully conscious, acting and speaking with the intent to bring more under the thrall of their goddess.

This all culminates in Emet-Selch, I believe.
"And like one of your primals, He tempered us. It was only natural. There is no resisting such power."
Even in the Ascians we can see a huge disparity between how single-minded their devotion is to their cause. While undoubtedly all are bound by Zodiark's will to see his rejoining, comparing Lahabrea to Emet-Selch seems cruel, especially when the former was apparently one of the most gifted alchemists and creationists at the head of the Akadaemia Anyder.

So I raise this point of discussion and questioning to you:
How much of a person's original personality and ambitions remain after they are tempered by a primal? Is it through a sheer force of personality or will that allows them to resist the mind-numbing effects of being turned into a thrall?
