Currently when a plot of land is put on sale for housing in Final Fantasy XIV, an invisible and random timer is put in place. While this timer is ticking, the plot is unavailable to buy. This encourages many players to stand next to a placard to the plot and constantly attempt to buy the plot until one lucky player buys it the moment the random timer expires. This timer, I've heard, can take up to 30 minutes to 24 hours. If a player wants the house, they are required to stand at the placard and attempt to buy the plot over and over for what is likely to be a long time, perhaps even past a time where they are supposed to go to bed. Most of the time, they'll have nothing to show for the time they spent attempting to buy the plot as only one player can get it.
Here's a possible solution that the Final Fantasy XIV team could implement...
When a plot of land is put on sale and the invisible and random timer starts ticking, a player can submit a Housing Lottery Ticket for the plot's asking price through a retainer, either at the placard (if possible) or at the summoning bell. Once the ticket is submitted, the player does not need to do anything else until the timer expires. Once the timer expires, a winner is picked at random out of the players that submitted their tickets. The winner gets the plot and the losers get their money back through their retainers. Players who participated in the Housing Lottery would get a notification, whether they won or lost, either in game or through the mail.
