...and most importantly, without a hint as to revealing them.
The problem is that I visit some FFXIV wiki-type of site (gamerescape, consolegameswiki, garlandtools) in search of an item, they all point to vendor(s) that have it. I then go there in-game, and the item isn't there. In fact, the vendors are showing a lot less items than the resources suggest.
More concretely, in Stormblood:
1. I'd just unlocked Rhalgr's Reach and was looking for a Slate Grinding Wheel, iirc. The "Independent Merchant" there should have had it under his tradecraft set of "Secondary Tools". Instead, I got some sparse partial list of what the vendor should have had. I ended up asking in shout chat, and a friendly player offered to buy and then trade the item to me.
2. "Maybe I just need to get to Kugane, so that this won't happen anymore?" I thought. Did some more MSQ, opened up this lovely city, and spoke to the tool merchant, Shichiho. Here's a screenshot of what I see for his "Purchase Tradecraft Secondary Tools":
Just like in Rhalgr's Reach, I'm given a similar, perhaps the same, skeleton list. According to gardlandtools, this is what he's *supposed to have* in this tab:
3. I just finished Ruby Sea main series of quests and a few sidequests, enough to fly and obtain mount speed 1. I was just about to leave to Yanxia, when I wondered if I could grab the mount speed riding map from Kugane. Nope! Got a similar partial-item treatment, missing exactly the riding maps I was looking for Mine:
What should be (garlandtools):
I suspect one has to fully complete the Stormblood expansion for the missing items to mysteriously appear. It would be nice if they were present but grayed out with a tooltip "locked until completion of the level 70 quest 'Stormblood' ".
In general, anywhere there could be more items, they should be grayed out with tooltips indicating how to make them appear. Now that I think more on this, I believe some basic one-star buyable Gold Saucer triple triad cards were missing until I either got into or finished Heavensward.
TLDR; vendor stuff is missing, perhaps by design, but no in-game mention of how to unlock it.
