Square Enix Supporting Black Lives Matter

To hear the creators of FF14 and the company speak for Black Lives Matter is a truly heartwarming thing to see.

Within FF14, we always see stories of the same brutality that BIPoC individuals face all over the globe. Stormblood is a story about imperial oppression, but it is also a story about police brutality. We see Garlean soldiers arbitrarily detaining Ala Mhigans and killing them. We see Ul'dah military "investigating" Ala Mhigan refugees just because they looked different from themselves. We see, in Kugane, the Sekiseigumi hunting down people based on their racial profiles.

So it is not surprising to me that Square Enix came out in support of Black Lives Matter. I think we can all applaud this brave move, because we already know, from the stories in FF14, and frankly, Final Fantasy in general, that we have always, as Warriors of Light, stood against injustice and oppression.

Hopefully this move is not merely PR and will spurn moves in the game itself to support BIPoC and especially black individuals. I have suggested Square Enix to add a PoC Scion to the game for 6.0 (Gaius Baelsar would be the best IMO). There will undoubtedly be many suggestions for what they can do to show support both at a corporate level and also at the in-game level.
