(spoilers?) The Elemental Spectrum

Urianger explains that elements are divided into two types, Astral and Umbral. However, as Ice and Fire are on the same elemental spectrum, I am left wondering why the Black Mage employs "Astral Fire" and "Umbral Ice"?
