Or rather the next emperor. When Zenos cut down his father he launched Garlemald into a civil war to determine the next emperor, a war Zenos has so far shown no interest in fighting. So who will the next Garlean Emperor be? Easy, Varis zos Galvus.
Now I know what you’re going to say “he’s dead, you literally mentioned that. He can’t possibly be the next emperor!” and you’d be right...except for one tiny thing. Varis has cloning technology. So far this technology was set up and used within the same patch, when Emet Selch was introduced. Varis shot Emet in the head, only for him to possess the body of another Solus clone. This has been the only use of the technology so far, and it adds literally nothing to the story as it stands. They could have cut that part out without changing the story at all...but they didn’t. Thus it stands to reason that it will still come into play. My guess is that Varis had a second, more advanced, cloning facility in secret which stores clone(s) of Varis. The Solus bodies would have simply been the testing facility.
So I can easily see the 5.5 patch cliffhanger ending being the return of Varis, and him reclaiming the throne of Garlemald. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being the main villain of 6.0 instead of Zenos again.
