[spoilers: 5.4, Other Ff Games] Old Crow's Big List Of Used/unused Primals

Original posting here. I've updated this list to include content up to Patch 5.4, though that's only minor changes. I feel that a more complete list of "past boss monster designs that have/have not appeared in 14" might be warranted, but that's a much, much larger project.

Basis: 14's use of series-staple summoned monsters (including eidolons, espers, aeons, etc) as their cast of god-like Primals has been mostly consistent throughout the game's life so far, even if Stormblood brought in a bunch of originals (and Shadowbringers has used... not that many?). That in mind, if we review past entries in the series, we might be able to find summoned monsters that might appear as primals in the future.

Note: While some superbosses like Omega and Shinryu have shown up as Primals or Primal-grade threats, I don't want to collect all of the boss/superboss enemies in the series in one list, so I'm going to stick with player-summonable monsters. I'm also going to shy away from summons that were more commonly monster types (Bomb, Sylph, Remora, etc) because the more interesting discussion is with the unique characters.

FF3 -- All of the summoned monsters in FF3 have appeared as primals.

FF4 -- All of the unique summoned monsters in FF4 have appeared as primals, with two exceptions.

  • Asura -- Asura, the Queen of Eidolons alongside Leviathan, has only appeared in FF4's remakes and hasn't reappeared in any main sequence FF games. Ravana bears some similarities but is clearly a distinct character.
  • The Mist Dragon -- Shows up as the final boss of The Burn in Stormblood.

FF5 -- All of the summoned monsters who appeared in FF5 are accounted for, though these stand out:

  • Catoblepas -- Shows up as a boss in Halatali, and as an S-Rank Hunt.
  • Golem -- Various monsters appear with the name "Golem" that often bear a resemblance to this summoned monster, but no unique primal has appeared with this name.
  • Syldra -- Showed up as a mount exclusive to the Collector's Edition of Stormblood.

FF6 -- Almost all of the Espers from FF6 can be accounted for, and while most have appeared as primals, many have also appeared as non-primal bosses.

  • Alexander -- Alexander appears as the setting of the Alexander raid series in Heavensward, in addition to being a boss within that series.
  • Fenrir -- Shows up as the final boss in Snowcloak in the 2.4 MSQ.
  • Crusader/Jihad -- Noting for the record that the three figures that appear in the Crusader summon are the three Warring Triad statues, and thus align with the Warring Triad primals Sophia, Sephirot, and Zurvan.
  • Kirin -- A kirin mount is available after acquiring the Nightmare mounts from the Extreme Trials in ARR.
  • Phantom -- Phantom-like enemies appear in various places, making this a non-unique.
  • Ragnarok -- Ragnarok appears as the WAR Zodiac Weapon, and is also an area within the Binding Coil of Bahamut.
  • Raiden -- Raiden appears as a boss in the Baldesion Arsenal in Eureka.
  • Siren -- Siren is the final boss of Pharos Sirius in ARR 2.1.
  • Unicorn -- A unicorn mount is available for Conjurers of Lvl 30.
  • Zona Seeker -- Zona Seeker appeared as a Hunt Mark in ARR.
  • Quetzalli, Maduin and Valigarmanda are our three absentees.

FF7 -- All of the Summons from FF7 are accounted for, though the iterations of Bahamut (Neo Bahamut and Bahamut ZERO) don't appear.

  • Hades -- Both the name and the Black Cauldron motif of the FF7 summon are used for Emet-Selch's "true form" in the Dying Gasp.
  • Kjata (Kujata) -- Shows up as the "boss" of the MRD class questchain.
  • Typhon -- Shows up in the Hildibrand chain in 2.4. (Note that Typhon appeared first in FF6 a co-boss with Ultros, but FF7 is the first instance of him appearing as a player-summonable monster.)

FF8 -- Most of FF8s Guardian Forces appear in one form or another.

  • Carbuncle -- Carbuncle does not appear as a primal in FF14, but as a kind of familiar-construct that aids arcanists and summoners. Alphinaud notably has a black Carbuncle he uses in his role as "Academician."
  • Doomtrain -- The "Phantom Express" from FF6 is largely considered part of the basis for the Doomtrain GF in FF8, and while it's not a sentient plague locomotive, the name is used by the Garleans to refer to a prisoner/material transport line that runs between Castrum Meridianum and Castrum Centri. Meanwhile, the JP name for the Doomtrain is "Glasya Labolas", a Key of Solomon reference that's used for a number of unrelated bosses throughout the FF series. In 14, it's notably the name of the giant second boss of Syrcus Tower.
  • Diabolos -- Appears as the core antagonist of the Shadows of Mhach raid series, and is fought at the end of Dun Scaith.
  • Cerberus -- Appears as one of the bosses in the World of Darkness in ARR. The Lightwarden Eros (final boss of the Qitana Ravel) and Canis Dirus (a Critical Engagement boss in the Bozjan Southern Front) are modified versions of the WoD boss.
  • Quetzalcoatl -- Appears as the final boss of Akadaemia Anyder.
  • Eden -- Appears as both the key location of, and as a boss within, the Eden raid series.
  • Tonberry -- Yeah, the Tonberry is an upjumped generic from FF5, but I feel it's worth pointing out that a Tonberry King was the boss in the Wanderer's Palace in ARR.
  • Gilgamesh -- There's a whole long story to tell about Gilgamesh, but FF8 was the first time that players could technically "summon" him. In 14, he mainly serves as comedy relief in the comedy relief questchains involving Inspector Hildibrand, up to and including summoning a primal of his partner Enkidu.
  • The Brothers and Pandemona/Pandaemonium are our absentees in this case. There's a FATE in Eureka that references the Brothers, but that doesn't really do justice to Sacred & Minotaur. I checked to see if Pandemona had showed up as a general monster design, but couldn't find anything.

FF9 -- All of the summonable eidolons that appear in FF9 (and the few that aren't summonable) have shown up in 14, with one exception. Some notable callouts:

  • Ark -- If the Void Ark wasn't enough of a reference, the Cruise Chaser in the Alexander raid echoes many of Ark's unique elements.
  • Atomos -- Atomos was a raid encounter back in the Crystal Tower raid series, showing up specifically in the Labyrinth of the Ancients and again in the World of Darkness. It's also made appearances elsewhere, including a "guest spot" during the Ozma encounter in Weeping City of Mhach.
  • Maduin/Madeen is the one absentee from the list of player summons.

FF10

  • Valefor -- A mob named Valefor appears in Labyrinth of the Ancients, but visually and thematically bears no resemblance. In the Doman Adventurers' Guild quest chain in Mor Dhona during Heavensward, a group of lalafellin thieves invoke the summoning of a primal named Valefor, but this is just a distraction, and no summoning takes place.
  • Ixion -- Appears as a Boss FATE and drops itself as a mount in Stormblood.
  • Yojimbo -- Appears as the boss of Kugane Castle in Stormblood, and late as a GATE event in the Gold Saucer.
  • Anima and the Magus Sisters are our absentees. Anima is really something that can fit just about anywhere given the uniqueness of her design. The Magus Sisters are teased in some NPC pixie dialogue in Il Mheg, but otherwise are not referenced.

FF11 -- All of 11's avatars show up 14, either as primals or as previously denoted.

FF12 -- Because of how many of 12's Espers were based partly on past FF final bosses rather than the traditional summoned monsters, it's a mixed bag which ones have appeared in 14. Given the lore connections between these Espers and the Ascians (the Espers are all diametrically opposed by the Scions of Light, where these Scions bear the names of the Ascians we know from 14) there's really a lot more analysis to be done here.

Notably, none of the Espers appear as "primals" necessarily, but almost exclusively as Lucavi drawn from auracite, itself a reference to the Ivalice series from which where these concepts originate.

  • Belias -- Appears as the second boss of Ridorana Lighthouse. A "Belias-Egi" is also deployed by Tristan, the enemy summoner in the level 30-50 SMN questchain.
  • Mateus -- Appears as the first boss of the Royal City of Rabanastre.
  • Shemhazai -- Shemhazai does not appear, but Rofocale, who apparently replaces her as the Sagittarius Lucavi, appears as the third boss of the Royal City of Rabanastre.
  • Hashmal -- Appears as the second boss of the Royal City of Rabanastre.
  • Cuchulainn --Appears as the third boss of the Void Ark.
  • Famfrit -- Appears as the first boss of Ridorana Lighthouse.
  • Ultima -- Appears as the final boss of Orbonne Monastery.
  • Zodiark -- To an extent it goes without saying, but Zodiark is the dark god of the Ascians. While he hasn't shown up directly in gameplay, he's clearly a major force within the lore.
  • Exodus -- Partially based on Exdeath from FF5, who is faced in Omega: Deltascape V4.0.
  • Chaos -- Partially based on Chaos from FF1, who is faced in Omega: Alphascape V1.0.
  • Adrammelech -- Appears as the third boss in Castrum Lacus Litore in the Bozjan Southern Front.
  • Zeromus and Zalera are our two absentees from this group, though you could technically count Shemhazai in here as well since she was "replaced" by the unique design of Rofocale.
    • And yeah, the name of "Zalera" is used for a unique fishing mark. I don't think that counts, but it was brought up last time. :P

FF13 -- There's much more analysis to do about the Eidolons and the fal'Cie about where they all line up with the primals, but most of the Eidolons are accounted for in 14.

  • Hecatoncheir -- This name is used for a race of giants who mainly show up in Copperbell Mines. The unique design of Vanille's Eidolon hasn't been used, so far as I can tell.
  • Brynhildr is our standout takeaway from this group, with a unique design and flavor.

Please let me know if there are any notable omissions.
