I don't think I'd call this a prediction or even speculation about what could happen in the future of the game's story, because I don't actually expect them to do this for reasons I'll talk about later. It's just occurred to me as a neat thing to think about, that's still technically in play based on what we know and don't know about Amaurot's story.
The fall of the Ancient world came, as we've been told, because of what's described as 'a keening beneath the earth', that caused the Ancient's creation magic to go haywire. This seemed to start happening overseas from Amaurot (the dream, fake Amaurot in The Tempest is set after it's hit overseas but before it hits Amaurot itself). We don't really know how the situation got to Amaurot, all we know is that it did. Interestingly, though, Emet-Selch's narration in the Amaurot dungeon doesn't mention The Sound itself; the description of it came from an NPC talking about the events overseas. An odd omission from someone who's trying to paint an accurate picture of the fall of the city.
I've seen a lot of people speculate that whatever made The Sound is going to be our next opponent after we take out Zodiark (and also possibly Hydaelyn; whole lotta people want to kill a blue rock, apparently). That after our current big villain, our next target is the thing that caused the crisis that gave rise to it all in the first place.
But what if we go find what made The Sound... and there's nothing to kill?
What if whatever made this sound is either long dead, or was never alive in the first place? What if it's not some malevolent external force, or even extant at all? We know from the aether current quests in Amaurot that the Ancient control over creation magic is... a little shaky, at best. And we know that things can go haywire without The Sound, because most of Akadaemia Anyder (everything before Quetzacoatl) was accidentally ignited.
What if what brought down Amaurot wasn't something external, but just... normal, human panic, writ large to the level of apocalypse because the Ancients themselves had too much power? Maybe The Sound was just that, a regular sound that caused a few people to panic, which then caused more people to panic until eventually the whole world's up in flames? A planet-wide equivalent of shouting 'FIRE' in a crowded theater and causing deaths by stampedes.
Like I said, I don't expect this one to actually be true, because if nothing else the developers know that the playerbase at large won't be happy to find out that they couldn't LB3 the world-ending monster in the face. But I think that right now, with the evidence and (and lack of certain pieces of it) you could read what I find an interesting alternative: That there is no bigger villain to kill.
The Ancients eventually killed themselves by accident, because they were never going to be destroyed by anything else.
