Hey all, I've really been enjoying Dawntrail and all the FF9 references, but I haven't seen many people talk about them except for a couple of the obvious ones, so I thought I'd try to make a list of everything I've noticed so far. If there's any you think I missed, be sure to let me know. I've excluded pre-7.0 references (like Ozma).
The sort of obvious:
-Sphene Alexandros the 14th and Garnet Alexandros the 17th (both with gemstone names of course)
-The mentions of locations in MSQ and sidequests. Alexandria, Lindblum, Cleyra, Conde Petie, the Iifa Tree (more on this), Daguerreo, and I think Esto Gaza was mentioned as well.
-Air Cabs, Alexandria Castle, Festival of the Hunt, Daguerreo library, Mus.
-Otis filling the role of Steiner, being a stalwart and loyal Captain of the Knights, with a bit of goofiness to him.
-Music
The big story stuff:
-In FF9: the world of Terra needed to fuse with and sort of take over Gaia to survive. In FF14: the Alexandrian Shard needs to fuse with a part of Etheirys to survive.
-In FF9: the flow of the souls of the Gaians needed to be disrupted in order to allow the souls of the Terrans to become part of the planets cycle of rebirth. In FF14: The souls of the people of Etheirys needed to be consumed to fuel the pseudo-immortality of the souls of the Alexandrians.
-In FF9: The initial attempt to fuse the two worlds failed, damaging Gaia. In FF14: I can't remember if it's stated that the Alexandrian Shard attempted to do the same in the past, but they possibly could have. I don't think the Ascians or Hydaelyn would've liked that very much.
-In FF9: Garland is an artificial Terran who has "lived" for thousands of years to oversee the fusing of the worlds. In FF14: Sphene sort of fills this role, and her post-life existence as an Endless has parallels to Garland.
-In FF9: The Iifa Tree is a Terran Tree that was planted on Gaia to affect the cycle of souls, heal the damage to Gaia, and terraform it. In FF14: Everkeep (which resembles a giant techno-Iifa Tree) was fused onto Etheirys, and has facilities for affecting the cycle of souls, and has terraformed the immediate surroundings.
-In FF9: The roots of the Iifa tree spread across the planet, spreading Mist. In FF14: Everkeep is building out Electrope lines instead.
-In FF9: Mist spawned monsters using the disrupted souls of the Gaians. In FF14, this has sort of been done already with light and dark on the First and Thirteenth, so it seems SE changed it up and tech-ified Mist's role into Electrope. It can even turn people into monsters by enhancing them with monster souls.
-After the events of the 99 trial, a portal to Living Memory (a Memoria reference) is opened above Everkeep, similiar to how the entrance to Memoria was above the Iifa Tree.
The small stuff/stretches:
-Zoraal Ja's relationship and animosity with Gulool Ja Ja, and his use of the electrope tech to acquire greater power and even change forms using the souls of others. It kind of has paralells with Kuja/Garland and Kuja awakening Trance using the souls of others.
-Krile being sent away from her homeland to protect her, sort of similar to Garnet. They also both have an important piece of jewelry.
-The B Rank, 13th Child, might a reference to Ophiochus, the 13th Stellazio coin, which is implied to be the child of Scorpio and Virgo.
-In FF9: The four elemental shrines needed to have their seals disabled to open the path to Terra. The deactivation of the four elemental terminals might be a reference to this.
-I find it odd that it's mentioned that the shard did have it's own Iifa Tree, which the Aero Terminal is built to resemble. The Iifa tree was foreign to the world of Gaia in FF9.
-I wasn't finding any clear references to other FF9 characters, but I hope we see some in future patches, raid.
-As far as I could tell, the only races that were native to the Alexandrian Shard were hyurs and elezen. FF9 contains various other races that I doubt we'll see (hippo people, duck people, rat people, etc.). Other FF14 races that weren't in the original FF9 appear to have been deliberately left out (I don't remember 9 having elezen/elves but they don't look too out of place anyway so whatever).
Future ideas:
-In FF9: Soulcage is a boss in the depths below the Iifa Tree. 14 could add an equivalent boss in a future patch, perhaps in a way to restore backups of Endless and give them one more chance at life.
-The world map shows what appears to be significant damage to the surface of the planet, in the oceans west of Tural (this is also the giant rift the bridge leading out of Tuliyollal stretched over). This could be related to the FF11 themed Alliance raid. I didn't play 11, but this post highlights mention of a sunken city of Movalpolos(which is apparently from 11). It could be somewhere in that rift.
-If the rift is not 11 related, but 9 related, it could be evidence of previous attempts by the Alexandrian Shard to fuse, causing damage to Etheirys.
-Give us a Black Waltz fight, Yoshi-P. Make it the coolest fight you've ever made.
There might be things that I missed, or thought of and forgot. Also, SE really went and made the expansion where we go to South and North America the 9/11 expansion.

Edits:
- u/DollarsAtStarNumber reminded me that Alexandria uses armies of artifical combatants in both games. The tech-soldiers in 14 are similiar to the black mages in 9.
- I forgot to mention the timelines debate introduced the the migrating lalafell shenanigans. It seems unclear if the Alexandrian Shard is an already rejoined shard that managed to retain a small fraction of their world, or if it's a shard the Ascians had been prepping for a Calamity. In FF9, Terra's Moon had come over to Gaia successfully during the failed fusion of the planets. In 14, since the pieces of Zodiark were in the moon, this could potentially imply that it's an already rejoined Shard the the Ascians were happy that they got their piece of Zodiark.
- Gargants. They're not the same though.
- This one is small but something something Coffee Sidequests.
