I've been thinking about this a lot recently; wouldn't it be cool to have a new gatherer class, the Archaeologist, to go with the idea from Yoshi-P's NY note that mentions digging for truths below?
Their gathering nodes would all be on the various ruins scattered across the realms including newly opened large underground areas as part of 6.0.
What would they gather? For the most part they'd gather crafting materials for new crafting recipes... but they'd also find RELICS to go into the newly repurposed off-hand slot after Paladin's sword and shield get wrapped up in one equippable!
The new relic slot would have an item in it that adds to or alters certain abilities that add some variety to jobs or beneficial stat boosts... think of WoW Trinkets but adjusted for FFXIV!
They could also find lore items like tablets/tomes that have region specific stories, say you're digging around Amdapor you could find a tome detailing the war of the Magi, stuff the lore nerds could sink their teeth into...
I'm the lore nerd... I mainly want this addition as an extension of the encyclopaedias but in-0game
