I'm going through Heavensward's story and I'm at 3.2, and I notice something about Vidofnir looking back.
Watching with more discerning eyes, she seems far more sorrowful than she comes off at first. She speaks in undertones that are very melancholy. And while she threatens Estinien early on, it becomes very apparent in hindsight: she hates this war. She bears no ill will towards humans at all, and the mere fact that she has had to fight against humans makes her feel...kind of guilty. When she sees the mural in 3.2, I honestly imagine her tearing up.
Not for nothing, while I'm aware that "Dragonsong" is told from Hydaelyn's point of view, you could also say it's told from Vidofnir's point of view and it remains just as powerful.
I want to explore this in some of my writing. Perhaps a moment at night when the main character, sleepless and pacing, comes across her singing the song, and she explains that the war made her estranged with a knight that she once knew, a friendship she deeply cherished. "In many ways do I understand my sire...and in just as many ways do I understand his sorrow. I wish, as bittersweet and fanciful it might seem, for this war to end. A thousand years of grief is trying even to the soul of a dragon." She looked down, and tears lined her eyes. "More than anything, I crave peace. It is why I support little Ysayle so. Even if I doubt her methods."
I'm not sure why, but I really liked Vidofnir.
