I've been studying Japanese going on a little under 4 years now. I've got down basic conversation enough that I can easily talk with my coworkers at work. . . And after several times of playing with only trying to touch into a Japanese FC, I finally decided to make the switch to play the game completely in Japanese. I need the practice, and I always played with the Japanese voice actors anyway so it was hard to listen to them when I had English at the bottom to reference. . .
I had to stop playing right before starting Stormblood, so my goal was to go back through my journal and the cutscene collections and pick everything back up, only in Japanese. . .
. . . .
. . . . . Sweet holy hydaelyn heresy, this is super hard.
Several of the characters use medieval-ish Japanese. And I don't mean little sentence endings like ござる and である
I'm talking stuff like this: 御神よ、我らが誓願を届け給え 御神よ、我らの祈願を叶え給え 御神よ、我らに慈悲を与え給え
. . . . and honestly, that wasn't even one of the hard ones.
There are so many Kanji (the Chinese symbols the Japanese use) that I haven't ever seen in my 4 years of study. Not to mention looking up some of these readings was a bioooooootch and a half.
So, all that complaining aside, this game is even more enjoyable to play in Japanese, at least from where I'm standing. There are several lines in ARR that kind of didn't carry the same weight in English as they did in English. Thinking back on how the scenes i'm watching was back when Yoshida was right on the cusp of bringing this game out of an utter dumpster fire, I really feel like there was some genuine emotions tied up in this dialogue. It hits right notes better than a lot of anime or manga I've gone through.
Now I'm saying this as someone who isn't what I would call "fluent" yet, so this may just be me talking out my ass about absolute not and all. If so feel free to downvote to hell and back.
But I really appreciate the dedication and the work that Yoshida and his team put into bringing this game back from the ashes. The work shows, and it puts this game in a very special place in my heart.
TL;DR : This game has difficult to understand dialogue sometimes. Want an extra challenge? Switch it to Japanese
