So I Leveled My Last Healer, Sch To 80.....

Feel free to express how wrong I am, but before you do keep in mind that I only leveled scholar to 80 and this is simply my leveling experience. That being said...

Holy crap, the amount of brainwork this Job needs is insane. I never had to account for every single boss ability to plan my cds. This was by far the sweatiest healer I have ever played in ANY MMO so far.

When I was leveling some things that I noticed were:

  • Lustrate desperation is real. Every other healer in the game has a big heal button, SCH as to press more buttons and consume more Mana to be as effective as other healers
  • Not having Aetherflow is uncomfortable and worrying in big pulls. I can't count the number of times I was spamming Aetherflow while the last mob was drawing its last breath.
  • Dissipation comes at a cost. I don't like the fairie getting taken away, this makes it more difficult for me to keep people alive, I know that there is a 20% healing potency increase but this is an emergency button and if I press it everything (including my faerie), counts
  • You have to consistently plan for the next encounter and know when to conserve and when to not, it REALLY sucks not being able to use Aetherflow outside combat
  • In the early levels, the potency of AoE healing is very pathetic, keeping group topped-off after raid-wides is pretty exhausting (until lvl you reach the 70s, or when u get emergency tactics)
  • Where DAFAQ did my mana go? By the time you have read this, a group in Aurum Vale has already wiped twice because a scholar couldn't keep up. I have almost NEVER had mana issues with ANY class before. Scholar has the WORST mana management of any healer. Adloquium has the LOWEST potency/mana making it one of the least efficient healing spells in the game.

BUT...if you plan correctly, you can carry a group quite easily.

  • I was surprised how I can keep someone completely topped off as a SCH when I planned for it. I was even able to contribute damage to the group even with 10 mobs ravaging the tank.
  • Knowing what mechanic is coming will completely nullify the damage incoming. Pre-Shielding is god-like.
  • Recitation on a shield is quite insane actually, it feels like extra health added on top, this even lets DPS survive tank busters when things go south.
  • I remember getting in a group in Mt. Gulg and they were new, and they got hit by EVERY mechanic but I still managed to keep them up with 6+Vul stacks. Wasn't the best experience but we never wiped.

While leveling I noted that I was indeed missing a tone of healing potency but had a bigger potency in shields. I then figured that SCH is actually the "filler healer". SCH is meant to work with a stronger higher potency healer like WHM or Di-AST in 8-Man content.

I am not sure that will happen to SCH and how will Sage work in the coming expansion but so far having a barrier Healer in 4-man feels underwhelming compared to the more effective pure healer.

If you are a SCH main, how do you optimize this class in 4-Man? Why pick it over other healers? Does the grass become greener when you master it?
